Hollywood has returned to Fernie less than a year after a major movie starring John Cusack was filmed here.
Last week the ski hill was shaking as teams working on the ground exploded avalanche bombs above Lizard Bowl, setting off avalanches while being filmed by a film crew in a helicopter.
The footage is for a new Leonardo Di Caprio movie called Inception, due for release next year.
Fernie Alpine Resort spokesperson, Matt Mosteller, said he was happy to let the film crew get some footage, as it was a great chance to show Fernie off to the world again.
“We have been working with the movie crew at Nakiska and heard they needed to film an avalanche and they were having a tough time finding a place with snow,” he said. “So when we mentioned that our Fernie Snow Safety team was doing our avy control work they asked if it would be OK to go along.
“We have had lots of snow - in fact the most snow in the five Alpine Bowls of Fernie Alpine Resort since 1984!
“With that we took extra precaution to clear out the major snow loading on the Headwall above Lizard Bowl and did some community service work by doing some clearing in areas above Fish Bowl.
“While we always do this before we open it was an extra benefit for promoting the community of Fernie to the world.”
He said the ski hill has had more than 85cm to 140cm in certain areas.
Inception is said to be a top-secret, mega-budgeted sci-fi film that is operating in the mountains under tight security. The film company cryptically refer to it as a "contemporary sci-fiactioner set within the architecture of the mind."
Featuring Di Caprio, Ellen Page, Michael Caine and Marion Cotillard, filming is currently underway in Kananaskis Country.
In April this year, a film crew spent several weeks in Fernie filming scenes for a John Cusack movie called Hot Tub Time Machine, also due for release next year.
