QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Local News
Dog lovers raise thousands for avalanche rescue dog Lily

More than $5,000 has been raised at a fundraiser for a Fernie Alpine Resort avalanche dog with cancer.

About 200 people turned up at The Corner Pocket restaurant at the ski hill on Monday night for the fundraising auction and dinner, about four times the number expected by organizer Kirsty Morris.

“It was amazing!” she said. “But I totally underestimated the number of dog-lovers in Fernie! Claude and Lillis at the Corner Pocket did such a great job delivering 175 meals.”

Lily a six-year-old golden retriever, was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer at Christmas and owner Kirk Gutzman has been taking her for radiation therapy in Calgary.

“I think Kirk was overwhelmed by the support of the community,” said Morris.

Lily and Kirk, who work at Fernie Alpine Resort as part of ski patrol, are heading to the Olympics to join the security team at the end of the week.
