Fernie Pipe Dreamer passes

A former editor of The Free Press, known for his pipe and his insightful columns, has died.

Arthur “Bruce” Ramsey passed away quietly with his family by his side on November 15, 2011 at the Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie at the age of 87 years.

Bruce was born in Naksup, BC on November 5, 1924 to parents Frederick and Agusta Ramsey.

Bruce was a reporter as well as an author, starting his career with the Vancouver Province and working his way east over the years until he reached Sparwood. He worked at The Free Press in the late seventies and early eighties, and is probably best known for his “Pipe Dreamer” column that was published in The Free Press for many years.

He was also the author of “The Big Dam Country,” “Ghost Towns of BC,” ”Britanna, Story Of A Mine,” “PGE Railway To The North” and “The Place Of Excellence.”

When he wasn’t writing, Bruce was a devoted family man and husband. He and his wife Betty loved to travel, exploring Europe, the Middle East, the Orient and Canada. He also loved to frequent his favourite watering hole, the Sparwood Legion, to get caught up on the local news and chat with his friends.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents and beloved wife Betty. He leaves behind children Doug and Jane along with grandchildren Sean, Shelby, Michelle, Amanda, Kassandra and Kyle, and great-grandchildren Silas, Phoenix and Cesla.
