On July 3, Kootenay Chiropractic and sports performance will be opening its doors to the public for the first time.

Stephanie Bryant, owner and operator is a fourth-generation local, and was drawn back to her hometown to start her first business. Bryant belongs to a long line of Hornquists who have been present in the Elk Valley since the early 1900’s.

“I’m really excited to be able to re-plant my roots in my hometown,” said Bryant.

Before returning to Fernie, Bryant was undertaking her bachelors in science and human biology, her masters of science in sports medicine, and her doctorate in chiropractic.

Growing up, figure skating was her life. She grew up knowing that Fernie lacked the necessary resources in sports medicine that she needed as an athlete. This is why she chose to pursue a career as a chiropractor and return to her hometown.

“There’s a ton of athletes in the area that don’t really have the training or care that they need,” said Bryant.

“I’ve always wanted to come back, to give back.”

Bryant went to nationals for figure skating in 2003. During this time, many people in the community donated money and time to help her achieve this dream. Bryant placed third.

In 2007 she returned to nationals, bringing back a gold medal for Fernie. When she became too old to compete locally, Bryant applied for and was accepted to perform in Disney On Ice.

Another reason for returning was her connections. Bryant is hoping that this will help the reception of her new business to be a positive one.

Starting her new business was a family project. Throughout the entire experience, Bryant has found room to laugh and not take things too seriously. She believes that a good business should be professional, but also knows that laughing is okay as well.

“I like to laugh and have fun,” said Bryant. “And I think that helps people get better too.”

Asked how it feels to officially open her business, Bryant acknowledged that it’s terrifying, but ‘incredibly exciting at the same time’.

There are six other chiropractor’s in Fernie, and Bryant admits it’s a risky move. However, she’s convinced that Fernie is where she wants to be.
