A movie about family and friends kicks off the new year at Fernie’s  Indie Film Fest.

Father and son, Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez, team up in The Way, a powerful and inspirational story about the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world.  Written and directed by Estevez, it was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.

The Way follows the journey of Tom (Martin Sheen), who ventures to Europe to recover the ashes of his son, who died in a freak accident while walking the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route in northwest Spain. Hit by a profound sadness and equipped with his son’s guidebook and backpack, he decides to embark on the 800 km spiritual pilgrimage himself in an attempt to honour his son’s memory.

Along the way he begrudgingly collects several eccentric travellers who come to form a supportive and surrogate family unit. This likeable and touching road trip movie, directed by Emilio Estevez, is set against the stunning vistas of France and Spain.

The Way is showing at the Vogue Theatre in Fernie on Monday, January 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Members: $9/adult; $8/youth. Standard: $10/adult; $9/youth.
