Cold Cuts, the Fernie hard-rock trio of lead singer Rob Boland, drummer Lee Vanderwoude and bassist Dylan McMorris is the new Legion House Band.

On Friday night, Cold Cuts were playing in front of a packed audience. It was certainly the biggest crowd at the Legion since Remembrance Day. One source said the Legion was so busy that the bar ran out of glasses.

“It’s been fun,” said Vanderwoude. “And we got all our friends to come and fill the place up. I didn’t expect this many people to be honest. It hasn’t been this busy in a long time. I was really impressed actually.”

Vanderwoude had to leave his drum kit back home when he moved to Fernie, “So drumming took a backseat to snowboarding for a long time,” he said.

Now that he’s all kitted-out, he’s ready to resume making music.

“It’s fun playing with these guys and it’s nice that we’re all good friends,” he said.

Cold Cuts is not the band’s first meat-based name.

“We used to be called Ham Salad, hence the name Cold Cuts,” said Boland. “It might be a temporary kind of name.”

They used to play a lot of shows in Fernie until their lead guitarist moved back to the U.K. It had been two-and-a-half years since their last show, said Boland. But now they’re back and raring to go.

“We thought Fernie needed something like us,” said Boland. “There were a lot of disc jockeys and not really a lot of live full bands that play loud.”
