Backcountry skiers trigger slide
Three skiers survived after being caught in an avalanche while ski touring near Fernie Alpine Resort Tuesday afternoon.
One of the skiers contacted ski patrol around 2:30 p.m. to ask for help for his two friends following the avalanche in the Mongolia Bowl area just outside the resort boundaries.
“We try to help out because we have such well trained staff, so we got a dog and patroller ready to go,” said Matt Mosteller.
“But by the time they got out there the skiers had skied out on their own.”
He said the three men were ski touring and one of them triggered a slide.
The RCMP said one of the men suffered non life threatening injuries.
“The three skiers were able to get themselves out of the avalanche area and safely made their way back within the Resort’s recreational boundaries,” said Sgt. Lorne Craig. A.T.
