Unsung hero honoured

Unsung hero honoured

By Andrea Horton

Each year in December the George S. Majic Spiritus Award is presented to a local person who enhances and honours community values and enriches the life of Fernie.

George Majic first won the Spiritus Award when he graduated from high school in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario where he grew up. After his passing George’s family and friends from Sault Ste. Marie wished to provide Fernie, where George spent his adult life, with it’s own ‘Spiritus Award’ to be presented to an individual in Fernie who demonstrates a persistent commitment to the community.

This year Mayor Mary Giuliano and Mrs. Anne Majic presented the award to one of Fernie’s unsung heroes, Anita Palmer.

“This is the sixth year that the award has been presented,” said Anne Majic. “Anita is the first recipient in the line of sports, she began volunteering in figure skating, minor hockey and junior hockey and has continued to do so for approximately 25 years. She worked like a trooper and always had a smile on her face.”

In the presence of her family Anita tearfully accepted the award and thanked her family for supporting her through all of the long hours she spent volunteering over the years.
