Elk Valley teachers begin strike
Day one of the three-day teachers' walk out started Monday morning.

The latest move in the teachers' strike is a result of last week's vote by nearly 28,000 BC Teachers’ Federation members who voted yes to the strike option out of the 32,209 who voted. The vote was in response to B.C. government's tabled legislation to impose a "cooling-off period" to the end of August and impose heavy fines on the union and its members for strikes during that time.
Negotiations between the teachers union and the government have been taking place since last summer. Since the school year began this past September, teachers have withdrawn some services to pressure the government. This week's action is the first time classes have been halted because of the impasse.
