Elkford restricts winter street parking

Effective immediately, residents and visitors to the District of Elkford will no longer be permitted to park their vehicles on the streets during snow season.

In an effort to increase the efficiency of snow removal within the community, the District is asking the public to park their cars and trucks in their garages, driveways, or a parking lot. Empty roadways allow snow plows to do a better job and sets aside room for sanding equipment to cover more space. Keeping vehicles off the street will also reduce unequal windrow distribution while plowing.

The changes to Elkford’s parking bylaw were approved at a council meeting held on November 13. The amended bylaw prohibits on-street parking from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. from October 1 to March 31. Additionally, parking on the street at any time during snow plowing, snow removal, snow hauling, or sanding operations is considered an offence.

The District is also reminding residents that it is illegal to push, place, or throw snow or ice upon a highway or lane.

Elkford isn’t the only Elk Valley community asking the public to keep their cars off the streets this winter. Sparwood amended their own bylaw this October, restricting street parking during the winter months to improve snow maintenance and road conditions.

Any offending vehicles caught parked on the street in Elkford or Sparwood during the prohibited times will be subject to a ticket.
