Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have established a new chapter in Fernie and Sparwood, thanks to the addition of Chantelle Alessio as the regions new Volunteer Community Leader.

Under this new title, Alessio will be part of the nationwide network of volunteers to represent MADD Canada and help deliver its message and programs to local communities. She will be focusing much of her initial effort on public awareness and education, pertaining to the goal of ending impaired driving.

Alessio was inspired to get involved with MADD because she is concerned about the societal desensitization of alcohol and drugs. She believes it is important to reach out to the youth and educate them on the dangers and risks of drinking and driving.

“One poor choice can steal their future or someone else’s,” said Alessio. “No one is immune to the consequences of driving under the influence. People are either dying or being injured daily in Canada because of this crime.”

In her eyes, MADD is an organization that saves lives.

“I care about the world (that) my daughters and her friends grow up in, and I want them to be safe,” she said.

Alessio sees MADD as a good source of education. She thinks that some people don’t have the right influences in their lives and “alcohol is just common practice in their lives or homes”.

Alessio just recently became involved with MADD and took on the role of Sparwood/Fernie Chapter Community Leader. She knows there are many levels of involvement with MADD but thought that she would make it her priority to become involved with a local chapter. Here, she will be available to answer calls and direct them where they need to go for the proper support and help.

Alessia was born and raised on Vancouver Island. She moved to the Elk Valley four years ago from Vancouver.

This is not the first time there was a Community Leader in the area, but after the previous one moved away a few years ago, the region has been calling for a new one.

Although Fernie and Sparwood are highlighted as the new regions of coverage, anyone from Elko to Elkford can access the closest chapter to them, or get in touch with Alessio at maddsparwoodfernie@gmail.com.

Alessia has offered help to people wanting to volunteer, and says she will happy to point them in the right direction. One program currently in place is the Red Ribbon Project and Campaign 911.

“Right now I am a one-woman-show but I welcome volunteers to join me in this cause,” she said.
