The Senior’s Drop-In Centre will be offering a pick up and drop of service from anywhere in town on every second Wednesday of the month.

It’s a new service offered by the centre as the result of a federal grant through New Horizons for Seniors.

The program is targeting isolated members of the community and allowing them to connect with others through the drop-in centre on 3rd Avenue.

“People easily fall into not leaving their houses for days,” said Courtney Baker, an organizer of the program. She says that especially in the winter, seniors can become isolated in town without the opportunity to go for outings.

“We’re hoping this program can really help that aspect of the community,” said Baker. “Make them feel like they’re included.”

The program is also a support for caregivers, who may require the relief to tend to errands and recharge. The $10,000 grant, coupled with $800 provided by the city of Fernie has allowed for the rental of a bus through Mountain High Shuttle.

The service is intended to stop at two local seniors’ homes, Tom Uphill Manor and Trinity Lodge.

“It’s a 24-passenger bus,” said Baker, noting that unfortunately, the bus is not wheelchair accessible. “Unfortunately, this program can’t address people with major mobility issues.”

The bus will drop participants off at the Senior’s Drop-In Centre, where they can visit friends, have coffee, and partake in a number of activities.

The centre has a pool table, shuffleboard and a spectacular cafe.

“Even if they come just to get lunch,” said Sandy Cervo, who attends the centre for weekly activities, “any help is better than none.”

She says that as the program gains popularity, she hopes it would shift to operate on a more frequent schedule.

The drop in centre offers lunches and beverages in addition to weekly programming such as games and yoga sessions.

“Meet your friends for coffee,” said Baker, adding the program is designed to “really give people the opportunity to join in and get that mental and social outlet, which is so good for your physical and mental health.”
