Cheryl Jean Lofstrom, beloved wife of Jim Lofstrom, passed away after a lengthy and painful illness with loved ones at her side on March 29, 2017 at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie BC. She was born August 4, 1948 in Rainy River, ON to Samuel and Charlotte Ernst, their youngest child and only daughter.

Jean grew up in the town of Rainy River where she learned the love of skating, swimming, dancing, playing hockey, and fishing.

There was never a fish she didn’t love to eat. She developed a love for trains, as her dad was an engineer on the old steam engines. Jean and her mom loved their shopping trips to Winnipeg on CN Rail.

After high school, Jean attended clerical college in Winnipeg where she graduated as a legal secretary. Her boys were often impressed by her stenography skills (shorthand). A trip to Europe at a young age gave her the love of travel. This bug took her to many different destinations.

During the collapse of the mining industry in Ontario, Jean

and her family moved out west where she began jobs at BC Coal, SS Drugs and finally Rayco Steel where she worked until

her retirement.

In 2003, Jean locked her keys in the trunk of her car along with her groceries. In her search for a solution to her problem, she found and met Jim. Years later he is still looking in odd places for her keys. Jean’s other love was reading stories to her grandchildren from her birthday book and quoting poetry by memory. There was never a Bingo loser at granny’s house, everyone always won a prize.

We her family, will miss her dearly for her laughter, wit, constant caring and love for us.

Jean is lovingly survived by her husband, Jim Lofstrom and his sons Perry and Tim Lofstrom, her sons: Duane (Gaylene) Nelson of Sparwood BC, and Ryan (Zita Cheverie) Nelson of Lethbridge, AB, and her precious grandchildren: Taylor, Jordan, Sydney, Danika, Kasson and Jonah. She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Charlotte Ernst, her brother Ronald Ernst and her son Troy Dale Nelson.

Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Elk Valley Hospice, c/o PO Box 670 Fernie, BC V0B 1M0.
