Norman Petriew, our beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the Elk Valley Hospital on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the age of 83 years. He was born in Hafford, Saskatchewan on May 28, 1928.

Norman is survived by three daughters: Gail Pidgeon, Shirley (Allan) Barrass and Linda Petriew (Terry Whiteman), five grandchildren: Trina (Sterling) Pettit, Krista Paniec (Aaron Boreen), Denver (Cam) Quesnel, Brelin (Scott) Henowitch, Keaton Barrass (Alyssa George), two great grandchildren: Morgan and Reid Pettit, his sister Dorothy Roberts and sisters-in-law Ines (Paul) Lemmetty and Lottie Bonin as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Lydia Petriew, parents Marcia and Nykola Petriew, son-in-law Dave Pidgeon, brothers Bill, John, George and Michael Petriew and his sister Bertha Shean.

Norman grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan and completed his schooling in Creston, BC where he began his career with the CPR. In 1945 Norman arrived in Michel, BC; it was here that he met Lydia Bonin whom he married in 1953. After 39 years of dedicated service, he retired from the CPR and enjoyed more time with his family, gardening, wine-making and playing crib. Norman was a Charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4455, an active member of S.O.A.P., and a past member of the Kinsmen Club. In 2009 Norman moved from his home in Sparwood to Lilac Terrace where everyone there became his extended family. His smile and gentleness will be missed by all.

Prayers were held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Friday, November 25th. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, November 26th with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. Following the service Norman was laid to rest next to his beloved Lydia at the Rivercrest Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
