PHOTOS: Coal Miner Days returns to Sparwood

A flurry of weekend activities brought family and friends together

A thank-god-its-summer frenzy descended upon Sparwood last week for Coal Miner Days.

Crowds of locals turned up to the events to enjoy some quality time with family and friends.

On June 10, the sun shone intermittently throughout the day and temperatures soared to 30 degrees. Locals started their day early with a pancake breakfast at the mall and then they headed out to watch the parade. Children threw candy and sprayed water guns at the crowd as they sat atop colourful floats decorated with balloons and streamers.

Families moseyed on over to the Recreation Centre in the afternoon to take in soccer and slow pitch, and visit the spray park and the artisan market. One of the star attractions was the petting zoo. Youth were able to meet goats, bunnies and piglets.

Youth taking part in the Soap Box Car Derby practiced their sharpest turns at Red Cedar Hill in preparation for the big race the next day. Cars speeded down the hill and came to a screeching halt at the bottom. Drivers reached the finish line with a smile on their face and hurried up the hill for another go.
