Fernie's BombsQUAD prepares to take on their first scrimmage
Fernie’s one and only junior roller derby team is getting ready for their first practice game. The Avalanche City BombsQUAD has been invited by Lethbridge’s Windy City Wipeouts to scrimmage on March 23.
The group of young, but fierce, local kids range in age from seven to 17 and are eager to try out their new skills in Lethbridge. BombsQUAD member Aim-X, aka Ryley Johnston, 17, is excited about the scrimmage and loves skating with her team. “Roller derby is an incredible sport,” she said. “High energy and great people. It's so much fun, I love it!”
A new sport that began in Fernie this month, junior roller derby takes inspiration from women’s roller derby. The program is designed to instill positive ideals in youth through a safe, fun positive environment where young people can be athletic, increase their self-confidence, and foster new friendships.
The BombsQUAD practices every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Max Turyk gymnasium. Everyone is encourage to come out to watch, try, learn, cheer, and support this hard working and determined group of kids as they prepare for their first game.
