A Fernie man’s grizzly collection

If you don’t want to end up thrown in jail, you will be wearing your Griz Days pin this year.

If you don’t want to end up thrown in jail, you will be wearing your Griz Days pin this year.

But Mark Brown will be wearing 34 pins!

Since 1978, Mark, of Brown’s Meat Market, has been collecting Griz Days pins.

He said that he started collecting them when he was a kid.

“I just thought it was something different to do, no one else was doing it,” said Brown.

“It’s not the same as it was back then,” he said about Griz Days. “I loved going to the snowmobile races as a kid.”

His first pin was round much like this year’s pin.

The pin collection stays safely tucked away until Griz Days when, he said he will be out sporting his now 34 pins.

“I love Griz Days because it brings people to town,” he said.

His favourite pins have been the centennial pins, which he says are harder to get.

The collection has become an important keepsake for Brown.

He is hoping to get a nice velvet display case so that he can properly showcase his collection.

“I was going to give them to someone who really liked them, but now I think I’m going to keep them as long as I’m alive,” he said.
