A Fernie-based artist hopes to inspire others to explore the backroads of British Columbia with his latest collection of work.

Nostalgic with memories of childhood road trips, Michael Hepher and his wife Anie bundled their children into their 1971 Volkswagen van, Truman, and embarked on an epic, two-month summer road trip through the province last year.

Over seven weeks and with Michael’s mom Maureen in tow, the family travelled 5500km, discovering lesser known areas of B.C. and strengthening their bond.

Michael painted on the road and stored canvases in a specially designed case.

“Backroads BC” is a collection of 30 oil paintings that depict scenes from the Hephers’ travels and will be unveiled at the Fernie Museum on Friday, June 15.

The exhibition opening will run from 7-9 p.m. and feature live music, complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.

Entry is free.
