On Saturday, March 17, the Regional District of East Kootenay named its 2018 Electoral Area Volunteers of the Year.

For Electoral Area A, Fernie’s own Jeri Mitchell was named Volunteer of the Year. This is the second time Mitchell has been awarded this title, the first in 2010.

Mitchell is passionate about her involvement with several local organization. She has been involved with Fernie Friends for Friends for many years, an organization that provides funding to families that are affected by a battle with cancer, from Morrissey to Hosmer.

“We just feel that nobody should be left out,” said Mitchell.

“We feel that you should not have to use up your life savings to fight a disease that you have no control over.”

Additionally, Mitchell volunteers with the Fernie Ghostriders, Fernie Figure Skating Club, and more.

“I help anyone who asks, it’s just who I am,” she said.

Mitchell says she was honoured, and humbled, to be named volunteer of the year for Area A.

“Today, more than ever, volunteers are the heart of our communities,” said RDEK Vice Chair Wendy Booth. “The Electoral Area Volunteer of the Years Awards is a long-standing program here at the RDEK and it is an honour to be able to formally celebrate six individuals this year.”

Winners of the other districts are as follows: For Area B, Norma Sommerville. For Area C, Mike Matejka. For Area E, Pat Walkey. For Area F, Kayja Becker and for Area G, Michael Hutchinson.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Booth congratulated their volunteers of the year, and thanked everyone who took the time to nominate “an extraordinary volunteer”.

“We had so many wonderful nominees this year and it really emphasizes the incredible contribution all volunteers make in the region,” she said.

The Volunteers of the Year will be formally recognized by the RDEK later this spring.
