A popular feature at the Fernie Aquatic Centre, the slide tower, which has been shut down since 2021, will soon be back in service.
The tower was closed in 2021 due to structural issues that made it unsafe for use.
While the City of Fernie had budgeted for its replacement last year, they were unable to find a contractor to make the upgrades during the regular summer maintenance shut down.
However, early in March work began with the removal of the concrete on the slide platform. A new tower is being built.
To reduce impacts to programming, and avoid an extended closure of the pool, the work on the slide tower will be done over the coming months on Sundays when the Aquatic Centre is already scheduled to be closed to the public.
It is hoped the slide tower will be available for use later this spring.
