Why save seeds? Wildsight says there are many advantages

Adaptation to Local Conditions: Explore the resilience of seeds that have braved the Elk Valley’s cold climate over generations. By saving and planting these hardy seeds, you’ll witness the power of nature’s adaptation, creating plants better suited to our unique environment.

Biodiversity Conservation: Embrace your role as a steward of biodiversity by preserving diverse plant varieties. Through seed saving, you contribute to safeguarding the rich tapestry of life, ensuring a more resilient and vibrant ecosystem.

Cost-Effectiveness: Learn the art of self-sufficiency as seed saving becomes a cost-effective practice. By saving seeds from successful crops, you’ll reduce the need to purchase new seeds each season, benefiting both your pocket and the planet.

Preservation of Heirloom Varieties: Embark on a journey to preserve precious heirloom and traditional plant varieties. These living treasures carry flavors, colors, and cultural significance unique to the cold climate, and they rely on us to ensure their survival.

Community and Local Exchange: The workshops feature knowledgeable gardeners within the community. Join the growing network of gardeners and farmers, exchanging valuable local seeds and wisdom, united in our dedication to a sustainable future.

Genetic Diversity for Research: Witness how your seed-saving efforts become part of a broader research and breeding initiative. By contributing to the Cold Climate Seed Library, you aid agricultural research aimed at developing climate-resilient crops.

Also coming up on August 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the EcoGarden is the Picnic in the Park, celebrating 20 years of the Eco Garden.

Join Wildsight for an evening of celebration as they mark this occasion on a picnic gathering. This event promises to be a blend of delicious food, local produce and the cherished memories created over the years.

One of the highlights of our EcoGarden 20th-anniversary picnic will be the potluck picnic. Wildsight encourages everyone to bring a dish to share with the community.

In keeping with the EcoGarden’s principles, everyone is encouraged to bring their own reusable plates, cups, cutlery, and picnic blankets.

You are also invited to explore the EcoGarden’s nooks and corners. Wander through the rental beds, breathe in the fresh air, and admire the vibrant flora that thrives here. Garden guides will be present to answer questions and share fascinating insights into the different plant species that call the EcoGarden home.
