The annual Community Yard Sale is taking place Saturday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and all individuals, families, organizations and businesses in Fernie are encouraged to take part.

If you have items you no longer use, then don’t miss out on this opportunity to declutter your home by throwing a yard sale, or to pick up some nice merchandise at someone else’s.

Data shows that an increasing number of Canadians are participating in the secondhand economy.

In a recent report commissioned by Kijiji, researchers from the University of Toronto and Montreal’s Observatoire de la Consommation Responsable revealed that spending on secondhand goods contributes about $34 billion to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Other benefits of the secondhand economy include job creation and a reduction in environmentally harmful waste, the study said, and that the average Canadian grants a second life to 76 products each year.

It found that, the average family of four in Canada apparently saves approximately $1,150 per year by buying secondhand goods.

Wildsight Elk Valley with support from previous organizers Outdoor Connections and event founder Rachel Cline are organizing the Community Yard Sale. When Outdoor Connections approached Wildsight Elk Valley about taking on the event, the board of directors was all in.

“It didn’t take long for the board to decide to move forward with this opportunity,” said Wildsight Elk Valley president Sharon Switzer in a statement. “Alongside food security and protecting biodiversity, Wildsight Elk Valley supports projects that enhance sustainable communities and a community yard sale is a perfect fit. We’re very thankful that Outdoor Connections thought of us, and we want the community to know about them. They are doing such important work.”

The registration fee is $20, and all funds raised will go towards Wildsight Elk Valley Projects. The deadline to register is May 18. A yard sale map with all locations will be published June 1.

Community members can register to be a part of the Wildsight Community Yard Sale by visiting wildsight.ca/yardsale. The registration fee includes a Community Yard Sale sign, an advertisement of your Community Yard Sale location on Wildsight’s exclusive Communtiy Yard Sale map, which will be published in The Free Press on June 1. Registration ends May 23.

Wildsight will also host a “White Elephant” yard sale at their office at 891 2nd Avenue in Fernie, where citizens who are inspired to declutter but don’t have a location to sell their goods, can donate them to the Wildsight Yard Sale.

You can contact the organizers via email elkvalley@wildsight.ca, drop by the Wildsight office at 891 2nd Ave. or call for inquiries at (250) 423-3322.
