Black Bear Books will host Fernie author Jean Lloyd for a reading of her book, Little Bear, at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
“Set some time in the future, the way of life is tribal, with a twist of magic,” says the books cover. “The people are hunter-gatherers, with an understanding of edible plants and herbs. There is a deep bond of respect for the four-leggeds, creepy crawlers, finned, furred, and the winged ones, all our relations.”
The book’s people live in teepees and use a system of portals to travel from the Elk River Valley to Rossland’s Granite Mountain.
The book has 26 full colour illustrations created by the Grade 4 and 5 students of the Fernie Academy, an independent elementary school, who enjoyed the story very much.
“A couple of remarks from the illustrators were they liked the way I saw the future and the way each chapter is a story on its own,” said Lloyd.
The author was raised in the West Kootenay, and spent much time exploring on foot, bicycle and skis.
“I enjoy the plant people, four-leggeds and winged ones while I’m in the woods,” she said. “We are blessed indeed to live in such a beautiful area.”
