Many are lucky enough to have been raised with it, many have come to live here because of it and many others have come back to it – Fernie’s awesome winters with loads of powder snow have a unique drawing power. It’s the Power of Powder.
In celebration of Fernie Alpine Resort’s 50th birthday the Fernie Museum is hosting a new exhibit this winter tracing Fernie’s ski heritage. The exhibit follows the development of the ski company and the people involved along the way. Visitors will be entertained by the numerous stories within the story – the marketing over the years; the ski patrol’s growth from a 1-man department to 40 patrollers; guessing the dates of ski school uniforms; learning where successful Fernie skiers are now; checking out different skiing interests from snowboarding to ski touring to telemarking.
This exhibit will be enjoyed by young and old with accessible information and artifacts ranging from old run signs to Bear t-bars and ski school outfits to an Elk Chair (yes the one that was taken out by an avalanche).
The exhibit officially opens January 28 and will run until the end of April. The Fernie Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 491 Second Avenue.
