The school year has begun.

The City of Fernie is reminding all drivers that school is back in this week.

All school zones have a speed limit of 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days. The City has radar equipped speed messaging signs in the IDES school zone on 13 St. Unless otherwise marked, speed limits on Fernie city streets are 40 km/h.

To help make streets safer for kids, please be courteous and park responsibly when dropping off or picking up children from school and follow these tips:

• Avoid double parking.

• Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking.’

• Keep School bus zones clear so kids can safely exit the bus.

• Leave 5 meters between your car and any crosswalk markings.

• Leave 5 meters to stop signs, yield signs or intersections

• Be courteous to neighbours around schools and don't block entrances to garages or driveways.
