Duck Race returns to Fernie

2,000 ducks were released into the Elk River on Sept. 28 to raise money for cause

The 3300 Club hosted its Duck Race for the first time in six years on Sept. 28.

2,000 rubber ducks travelled a few kilometres down the Elk River, from the Highway 3 bridge in North Fernie to Bridge Bistro. Proceeds from the event will help the club meet a $9,000 fundraising goal for youth sports.

The event was cancelled for a few years in a row due to low water levels in the Elk River, and the subsequent pandemic kept it on the backburner.

Organizer Ryan Vincent said he's happy to see the club bring back the event, as it's been something he's enjoyed for many years.

"I remember watching it when I was younger, so it's good to bring back tradition for the fall to kick off fundraising for the club," he said.

Ducks cost $5 per racer and participants can buy multiple ducks to increase their changes of winning. Prizes are awarded for the first five to complete the river journey. Darren Gigliotti's was awarded with a cash prize of $1,000 when his duck crossed the finish line first.  Bruce Nelson was hot on his heals and claimed a $1,000 gift card to Fernie Home Hardware. Shane Winget, not far behind, won a $500 gift card to Straight Line Bicycles. Dave B. won two rounds of golf at Fernie Golf and Country Club and Theresa Cole Smith brought home a Yeti prize pack courtesy of Elk River Guiding Co.
