Fernie Rotary has raised more than $35,000 for medical equipment at the Elk Valley Hospital, through its annual culinary event Feast For A Cause.
200 guests enjoyed an evening of delicious food and community connection at the fundraising dinner, hosted on May 3 at the Fernie Memorial Arena.
“Feast for a Cause is quickly becoming one of Fernie’s most anticipated events,” said Rotary president Cindy Pearson. “We’re grateful for the incredible generosity of our community.”
13 local businesses prepared signature small tasting plates for guests that offered an assortment of familiar favourites and new experimental dishes. A variety of businesses participated in the event for the first time, including Bayleaf, Bootleg Bread, Bramasole, Bridge Bistro, Chilango Mexican, Elevated Plate Catering, Himalayan Spice Bistro, House of Gato, Nevado’s, Island Lake Lodge, Loaf Italian Restaurant, Park Place Lodge, and The Chopstick Truck.
Pearson said the dishes were a pleasant surprise for guests, since they weren't served with the businesses' usual fare.
"We really encourage them to create something that's not on the menu," she said.
They raised over $35,000 to help purchase two diagnostic machines for the Elk Valley Hospital. Pearson said East Kootenay Foundation for Health will be matching the funds, and the remaining money will go towards the Rotary's initiatives.
A silent auction with over 30 items valued at $30,000, contributed most of the money.
The Rotary distributed a few culinary awards. Attendees selected Elevated Plate Catering for the People's Choice award, and the businesses gave Island Lake Lodge the Chef's Choice award. Best Bite was given to Bridge Bistro.
Rotarians Bill Pittmann and Rex Kary, culinary advisor Barrie Elliott and dedicated participants Tammy Ogden and Jen Boucher lent a helping hand behind the scenes. DJ el Chantel spun some lively tunes to entertain the guests.
This year's event trended in more eco-friendly direction and made use of sustainable plates from compostable plant matter.
"It truly is a community event where everyone comes together," said Pearson.
