Gears grind, dirt flies at 50th annivesary Demolition Derby

Fernie Lions Club held the 50th annual Demolition Derby on Sept. 1

Cars sustained some serious damage at the Fernie Lions Club's 50th annual Demolition Derby on Sept. 1.

There were 19 large cars, eights truck and eight small cars that smashed their way across the Demolition Derby Grounds. A few brave drivers went up against a contestant riding in a banned derby car model in the "Rick's Renegades," heat.

Hunter Wilson won the truck category, with Christopher Gregr not far behind him in second place.

Brendan McAulay took first his small car, with Wayne Bailey coming in a close second.

Lyndon Franzreb, Steve Charlton and Steve Nystrom won first, second and third respectively, in the full-sized car category.

Franco Bafaro emerged victorious from the "Rick's Renegades," heat.

Lantz Reyne won "Most Aggressive Driver," and Jay Mainville was given the award for "Best Small Car Destruction."

Lion's president Ted Shoesmith said they raised a record amount of money at this year's events, and sold out of their food and drinks by early afternoon.

Shosemith said the club can't disclose how much they made yet, but mentioned the money would go to helping local charities dedicated to medical care, sports, seniors, youth and persons with disabilities. In the past, the club has donated to the Salvation Army, Angel Flight East Kootenay, the Fernie Skating Club and local youth groups.
