Elk River Watershed Collaborative Monitoring Program is hosting the Without Water Symposium June 5.

Organized in partnership with Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation, Living Lakes Canada and the Elk River Alliance, the event will discuss various topics relating to environmental decision-making, keeping local watersheds clean and managing drought.

"It is unlikely anyone will disagree that we need clean and reliable sources of water, but how we protect our water is a complex issue. In this symposium, we have the opportunity to learn from Indigenous knowledge holders how to reframe our relationship with water in order to become better water stewards," said Living Lakes Canada executive director Kat Hartwig.

Representatives from Indigenous communities, government bodies, non-profits, scientists and industry representatives will spend the day discussing improvements to watershed decision making. In the evening, Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it will host a panel discussion in Grasmere from 4:30 to 8 p.m., with a welcome ceremony and complimentary dinner.

"I'm really excited to see this event come together. We've been engaging with our local Elk Valley community for multiple years and working hard on building a united view of our beautiful watershed from different perspectives. This event is the next step in continuing this process," said program manager Caitlin Henneker

There are only 50 spots available for this event. To register, visit elkrivercollaborative.ca/without-water.
