The Fernie Heritage Library recently hosted its much-anticipated event, Beets and Books, transforming one of the town’s most cherished buildings into a vibrant hub of culinary exploration and community connection. This two-part series, held on Oct. 16 and Nov. 13, invited participants to explore global flavours while cultivating friendships through food, culture, and shared experiences.

The first session, “Indian-Inspired Delights,” featured culinary enthusiast and beloved local librarian Pruthvi (Pru) Harshan, who led guests through the preparation of spice-infused vegetarian dishes. Attendees not only learned new cooking techniques but also engaged in a creative craft project, designing their own reusable grocery bags. The second session, “A Taste of Mexico,” showcased the talents of guest chef Ezequiel Chavez Betancourt, who guided participants in crafting traditional Mexican dishes. The sessions culminated in shared meals with new and old friends, where stories and laughter were exchanged around the tables.

Emma Dressler, Director of the Fernie Heritage Library, encapsulated the spirit of the event: “This is about food and community and just another way Fernie Heritage Library helps connect our community, which is something that is incredibly important to us.”

The event, made possible through a collaborative effort with the Fernie Youth Action Network and supported by a grant from the Columbia Basin Trust was an incredible success and brought together people of all ages, celebrating both the diversity of food and cultivating local connections.

As participants left the library, many echoed a shared sentiment—the joy of coming together, learning, and savouring delicious dishes in an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie. The Beets and Books event wasn’t just about food; it was about nurturing relationships, one recipe at a time.
