The Fernie Alpine Ski Team (FAST) has long been a cornerstone within the community of Fernie, having encouraged the competitive spirit and love of skiing in kids throughout the valley for many generations.

For over 35 years, Rod Timm has played a pivotal role in this legacy as the Athletic Director of FAST, shaping the program into what it is today: a tight-knit, family-focused club where passion for the sport is passed from generation to generation.

Rod’s philosophy has always been clear and simple: "Create a love of skiing that will last a lifetime." This approach has helped build not just athletes but lifelong skiers who continue to carry the sport forward. Under his leadership, FAST has produced talented skiers who have gone on to achieve great things (some of whom have gone on to compete at the World Cup and Olympic level), including his own children, Dylan and Jess. Dylan, has recently gone on to ski for the University of Alaska, and Jess currently skis on the FIS circuit, furthering the family’s legacy in competitive skiing.

While Rod has been at the head of FAST’s development, his wife, Shirley, has been an unwavering supporter of the club, often behind the scenes ensuring the success of events. As a dedicated volunteer, Shirley can often be found making lunches for volunteers or working the BBQ at race events, serving hot dogs to athletes and their families. Her energy and commitment truly showcase the family and community focus of the club.

FAST’s focus on family makes it unique among ski clubs. The club is not just about developing athletes; it’s about fostering connections between like-minded families who share a passion for the sport. Whether it be volunteering at an event, or just meeting others at one of the club's many social events, parents often become close friends, supporting one another throughout the ski season and building lasting relationships. For those with young children, FAST’s U8 and U10 programs offer the perfect introduction to the sport.

Whether you're a seasoned racer or are new to the ski racing world, FAST provides a fun environment where kids develop lifelong skiing skills in a great family orientated club. With Rod and Shirley Timm’s dedication and the club’s inclusive, community-driven approach, the Fernie Alpine Ski Team continues to inspire skiers of all ages, ensuring that the love of skiing and ski racing continues for many years to come in Fernie.
