A wind storm that whipped through the Elk Valley and the greater Kootenay region on Sept. 25, left destruction in its wake just south of Fernie.
Cokato resident Dan Sliva said an aggressive bout of wind funneled through their neighbourhood that day, strong enough to toss their their lawn chairs off their porch and to cut the power out for a few minutes.
The next morning, he awoke to see downed trees near his residence, including one that had fallen on top of a neighbour's house. He noticed that several trees had been torn down in a forested area across from the Elk River
"We saw 100-year-old poplar trees, not only fallen, but uprooted," he said.
A wind alert was issued on Wednesday for the Kootenay region as cold front began moving into the region, warning residents of events similar to what Sliva experienced.
A tornado was also recorded as touching down near Fiva Creek and Christian Valley Roads in West Kootenay, but no such weather system was noted in the Fernie area.
