The Fernie Nordic Society hosted its sixth annual Flying Viking Challenge on Mar. 9 to raise money for local ski racers.
Locals got suited up in their fiercest viking attire, reminiscent of Erik the Red, and skied a snowy course through the woods. 70 participants skied distances that ranged from 1.5 to 50 km.
The loop started at the warming hut at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre and wound through the provincial park towards Fernie Alpine Resort. Skiers ascended the hill on Deer Chair and made their way down to the resort's cross country trails to complete a full loop on Scandia trail before returning back to the starting point.
