Accessibility improvements are coming Kootenay recreation facilities thanks to funding support from the Columbia Basin Trust.
In Cranbrook, $26,000 is being earmarked for installing a pool access ramp and two portable pool lifts at Western Financial Place Aquatics Centre, while in Creston, $50,000 is going towards enhancing accessibility to the playing field at the Creston and District Community Complex. Additionally, Canyon is getting $50,000 for upgrading playground surfaces and install accessible equipment at Canyon Park.
Sparwood is receiving $50,000 to install an elevator to improve accessibility at Sparwood Community Hall, and Windermere is receiving the same amount for upgrading playground surface to improve accessibility at Windermere Beach.
“These improvements will reduce barriers to access for children with diverse physical, developmental, cognitive and neurodiverse needs, fostering a more inclusive recreational experience for Basin families,” says Hannah Holden, Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust. “Whether indoors or outdoors, these projects promote active and enjoyable play, health and well-being for more children.”
The funding will be used for accessibility initiatives such as adding adaptive play equipment, sensory-friendly features like sound panels and lighting, upgraded playground surfaces, natural design elements, and improved access to pools, trails and seating areas.
All told, 25 Basin communities are being supported by the Columbia Basin Trust with nearly $1.2 million in funding.
