Car aficionados will have a chance to indulge their interest this weekend at the 10th annual Show N’ Shine car show in Fernie.

The event, taking place on Saturday (Aug. 27), is expected to attract up to 100 vehicles, according to Oscar Nielsen of the Elk Valley Cruisers (EVC), who are putting on the show for the second year after taking over from the Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s going to be a good time,” he said.

The show is taking place around City Hall on 3rd Ave from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It will see participants rolling into town and parking along the road for viewing, along with live music and gift giveaways. Cars will be judged, with trophies to be handed out for winners in 17 categories.

Nielsen said that as of Aug. 22, over 50 people had pre-registered to participate. Last year, he said, they were capped at about 65 cars due to COVID, but still had about 40 more drivers show up and park around the city.

Participants will be coming from throughout the Elk Valley, and Nielsen said cars were registered from as far as Strathmore, Alberta.

“It’s a really good hobby for the area, and it’s good for the community.”

Registration is $25, and can be done via email (EVCruisers@gmail.com), the EVC Facebook page, or in person the day of the event, with all proceeds going back into the community, according to Nielsen, who said the club would also be donating mechanical tools to Fernie Secondary School.

Nielsen suggested people go shop on 2nd. Ave to support local businesses.

“It’s a pretty good cause. There’s lots of vehicles.”

He said the event is more or less like a family day.

“We have the grass that’s all around City Hall, so if people want to come and just put down a blanket and enjoy life, they’re more than welcome.”

The street will be blocked off from the post office to the fire hall, with the closure in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
