East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett toured the areas in the Elk Valley that have been worst hit by flooding, and applauded the efforts of volunteers.

Bennett visited the areas north of Elkford and Hosmer, where homes have been evacuated.

He said he was impressed with the community spirit in the Valley.

“I stopped in Fernie at the emergency centre and a guy came in and just offered his land up to anyone who wanted to park a camper on it. He wasn’t even from an area affected by flooding, just someone who wanted to offer help,” said Bennett.

“Then in Hosmer I saw all the young people who had been sand bagging all day. Between these volunteers and the professionals working around the clock, it is an extraordinary effort.”
