Collision on Highway 3/93 claims life of Baynes Lakes woman

On March 10, at approximately 12:30 p.m., RCMP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 3/93 near Wardner.

A 44-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 3/93 near Wardner at approximately 12:30 p.m., on March 10.

Cranbrook RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services responded to the fatal motor vehicle collision after a 2016 Honda Pilot and a 2012 Dodge Caravan collided head-on, resulting in the death of a female from the Baynes Lake area, who was driving the Dodge Caravan.

The 36-year-old female driver of the Honda Pilot sustained serious injuries and was transported to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. She was subsequently airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital, said East Kootenay Traffic Services RCMP Sgt. Don Erichsen.

Police have yet to speak to her, said Erichsen.

“An unusual aspect of this is we don’t have any eye-witnesses to the actual event,” said Erichsen. “We’re trying to track down people that may have seen the crash and can give us some indication of what was going on.”

The highway was closed for approximately five hours as police and a collision reconstructionist investigated the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the actual collision or observed either vehicle prior to the collision is asked to contact East Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-420-4244.

The collision is being investigated by East Kootenay Traffic Services and the BC Coroner’s Service. The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time.

Motorists should check Drivebc.ca for road conditions before heading out on the highways and allow extra time to arrive safely.
