A CP Rail freight train carrying potash derailed in the Crowsnest Pass at 5 p.m. on Friday evening, east of the B.C. – Alberta border at Crowsnest Lake.
According to a CP Rail spokesperson, Salem Woodrow, there were no dangerous goods involved.
“CP immediately deployed resources to the site,” he said in a statement.
He also reported there were no injuries to the crew, and the cause of the incident was under investigation.
CP Rail said that 42 cars carrying potash detailed. A single potash car became submerged in Crowsnest Lake during the derailment.
CP is working closely with Alberta Environment, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders on a mitigation plan, which will include thorough water monitoring,” said Woodrow.
“The car in question is being monitored and will be removed when it is safe to do so.”
Track repairs and safety inspections were completed by Sunday evening, when the rail line reopened to freight traffic.
