The District of Sparwood has reported vandalism at the Sparwood Recreation and Leisure Centre.

According to a release,, an area near the Sparwood Spray Park were vandalised over the weekend of August 14 and 15. Concrete seats were smashed, the area was spray painted and vandals also had a go at the washrooms as well.

Mayor David Wilks said that was deeply disappointing that community amenities had been damaged, stopping residents from enjoying the area.

“I find it reprehensible,” he said. “Especially where it is at the water park - there’s a lot of people that use that area every day.”

Wilks said that the concrete benches that were smashed were not cheap, and the damage done was not something that could be done just by jumping on the benches.

“They would have needed something significant, like a sledge hammer, to break them.

“I would strongly urge those responsible to go find something more constructive to do.”

The seats and facilities will be repaired and returned to working condition, costing ratepayer money and staff time to do.

The district requested anyone with information to come toward, and contact the Bylaw Enforcement Officer at 250-425-5367.
