Bobbie Saga will be running for a councillor position in the District of Sparwood in the 2014 municipal election.

A journalist and proud member of the District of Sparwood community since 1999, Bobbie Saga said she feels as though she’s been able to build strong relationships with not only the District of Sparwood community, but the Elk Valley as a whole.

“I think I have something to contribute to my community,” she said, adding, “That something is my experience, my knowledge, my background.”

She went on to say, “I reported on the community so I got to know a lot of people.”

At one point in time, Saga was the senior reporter of the Elk Valley Miner newspaper and a reporter and contributor for The Free Press.

Now Saga is interested in shifting from reporting on community events and issues to representing the community in the District of Sparwood politics.

“What pushed me to run this time was, I was listening to some of my neighbours and talking to them and they basically convinced me that, ‘this is a good thing for you to do,’” Saga said. “Once you’re elected as councillor, you should have a pulse on the community, you represent those people.”

She continued by stating, “I hope I can bring the voice of the community to council meetings.”

Saga also has a background with respect to educational issues, one that she said goes back 25 years. But in terms of bringing forward issues to council, Saga said she doesn’t have any particular issues in mind, and just hopes to give a voice to the community.

“I hope I don’t have to fight, I’d rather bring people together,” she said.
