Hundreds of pro bikers streamed to Fernie over the weekend to compete in an annual national and provincial race.

The Fernie Dunbar Summer Series Canada Cup / BC Cup Downhill Mountain Bike Race was hosted at the Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR) on July 16 and 17.

Karen Pepper, marketing and communications manager with FAR, said the event went great.

“We were super happy with it,” she said, adding that it beought in about 300 too-level riders.

The race featured multiple categories, including an adaptive category (for athletes who use wheelchairs).

According to a FAR website description of the event, Fernie was the debut location of the first ever adaptive mountain bike category last year.

Pepper said they were ‘super stoked’ to have the adaptive category, which had about 13 racers in both men’s and women’s.

“That was super awesome.”

The winner of the adaptive sport expert men’s category was Wufky Crosby, and the winner in the adaptive women’s category was Amanda Timm.

In the UCI pro elite category, the men’s winner was Jackson Frew and the women’s was Claire Buchar.

The event was the first in a series of races and is also taking competitors to Panorama Mountain Resort and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

The race was put on in partnership with SE Racing, Cycling Canada, Cycling BC and Kootenay Adaptive Sports Association.

Pepper gave a big thank you to the volunteers who helped make the event happen.

“We totally can’t operate a race of this magnitude without them.”

She also thanked the members of the community who came out to cheer on the athletes.

“It was just a really good vibe and a really fun weekend for everybody.”
