Elk Valley RCMP responded to a theft in Elkford, a stolen vehicle in Sparwood and an impaired driver on Highway 43 over the weekend.
On June 2, 2024 at about 9:45, RCMP received a call from a man who reported that his 2024 Ford F150 had gone off the highway and ended up in the Elk River. When police arrived they noted the man had an odour of liquor and he provided a breath sample, which was a fail.
The 34 year old Elkford resident was arrested for impaired driving. Given he had no previous history of impaired driving, the officer decided to issue a Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The truck was removed from the river and impounded for 30 days, while the driver was issued a 90 day suspension of his driver’s licence.
Earlier that evening, just after 8 p.m. an RCMP officer in Sparwood noted a Chevy Geo parked at a gas station on Aspen Drive. Information received from running a check on the vehicle reported it as stolen out of Pincher Creek, Alberta. Officers waited and a driver returned to the vehicle. A 31-year old resident of Cranbrook was arrested without incident. He was released on an Appearance Notice for Provincial Court in Fernie on July 18, 2024.
On June 1, Elk Valley RCMP were called for a theft from an apartment building in Elkford. An officer was shown photos of the truck and youths involved The officer recognized the youth and vehicle and contacted their parents. Two of the three missing cigarette disposal units were returned the next day. An investigation is ongoing.
