The Elkford Biking Club has made a lot of progress on establishing a bike park in Elkford since it first began in mid-2020, and now has preliminary designs to show for it.

Club president and founder, Jason Meldrum said that over this past summer the club worked with a designer and builder from Vernon who specialises in building trails and parks.

“In August he visited our site and consulted with the club and the district of Elkford,” said Meldrum, who had some teaser images of the concept design to show off as a result, which Meldrum said showcased the designers ability to work with the natural terrain of Elkford.

“The builder supplied us a design as well as a concept video. With a lot of constructive discussion among the club and the DOE, the decision was made to add a paved pump track into budget. The lack of maintenance from a paved track was a big selling point. And now having a paved track in the design, allows users such as scooters to also enjoy our facility.”

The park as envisioned will be located within downtown Elkford, in the Boivin Corridor, south of the District of Elkford municipal office and next to Boivin Creek. The preliminary designs as they exist now include a pump track along with a mountain biking trail with lots of features, along with park benches and mining features as a nod to Elkford’s heritage.

Meldrum said the club continued to apply for grants from various organizations. “Some haven’t made decisions yet, but we are hopeful Funding will come!”

So far the club has received funding from multiple local businesses, and Teck donated proceeds from the July movie night to the park.

Meldrum originally started pushing for a bike park in August last year as a means to keep young Elkford locals busy, saying at the time that while there were lots of great trails around town, there was a gap in activities for those that were younger and less experienced.
