The Sparwood Food Drive is back - and after some changes for last year’s event, in 2021 it will be a return to a familiar form with emergency services doing a tour of town, knocking on doors and asking for the community to dig deep (into their pantries) for those in need.

“When you make it super easy for people to donate, you get more uptake and involvement,” said Ed Ehrler of Sparwood Search and Rescue (SSAR).

“We’ll be knocking on doors. If you do want to leave your donation on your front step - that makes it easier for us.”

Volunteers and members of Sparwood Search and Rescue, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance services and the RCMP will be touring town on Dec. 5, lights and sirens ablaze to let locals know they’re coming. Rolling out from fire hall #1 at around 5:30pm, they’ll be hitting most residential areas in town.

“The food bank does a lot of great work, and it’s important to support them.”

Ehrler said they’d be putting out a map of their route before the day. If you don’t live along the route, you’ll be able to find them doing the rounds on the day (they will be hard to miss with lights and sirens), or you can donate food or cash directly to the food bank in Centennial Square.

Any donations are encouraged - they’re looking for non-perishable foods, new, unwrapped toys, board games, family-friendly books, cash and gift cards.

Ehrler said the tradition of supporting the food drive was strong in Sparwood.

“A few years ago we were going house to house, and one house had put out eight boxes of food. It just about filled up our truck - it was fantastic.”

Details on the food drive will be readily available on the Sparwood Food Drive 2021 facebook page. You can find a link here.
