‘Fantastic event’: Elkford’s annual triathlon returns after two-year hiatus

The triathlon attracted about 60 participants, about half of which were kids

Elkford’s annual triathlon returned to town on Sunday (June 5) after a two year hiatus.

“It was so fun to get back to this fantastic event after cancelling the last two editions,” said Guillaume Goggin, president of the Elkford Triathlon Society.

About 60 people showed up for the Elkford Sprint Triathlon, including around 30 kids, and about half were from out of town, he said.

Adult participants engaged in a 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike, and a five kilometre run.

Kids had two options for distance, either a 200 metre swim, five kilometre bike and two kilometre run, or a 100 metre swim, two kilometre bike, and 600 metre run.

Participants ranged from five to 65 years in age.

“Thanks to our sponsors and volunteers, we had a really nice day,” Goggin said, adding they were lucky that the rain held off until everything was cleaned and stored.

“What I like about triathlon is that everyone does have a weakness in either the run, the bike or the swim, and triathlon challenges you to improve it,” Goggin said.

“I’ve witnessed a lot of effort and perseverance throughout the day, but in the end, everyone was smiling.”

Goggin said they were already looking forward to next year’s triathlon.

“Get ready for June 4th, 2023.”
