Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR) has pulled the plug on Slope Soaker.

The popular end of season event challenges skiers and snowboarders to skim across a large pond, and was due to be held on Sunday in conjunction with closing weekend and Fernival.

On Tuesday, FAR announced the Slope Soaker will not go ahead this year due to conditions.

“What Mother Nature gave us this spring – lots of warm, slushy, bluebird days,” said FAR in a Facebook post.

“What she didn’t give us this spring – snow that is strong enough to hold a giant pool of water for 60+ competitors to skim across.

“Therefore, due to the current conditions, we are unable to hold the Coca Cola Slope Soaker event this year.”

All competitors who have already entered will receive a full refund, FAR added.

The Resorts of the Canadian Rockies-owned resort has received about seven metres of snowfall this season, compared to nearly 12 metres the previous season.

Other closing weekend events are going ahead as planned.

On Saturday, the Powder Pedal Paddle relay race returns, followed by live music from local band The Runs and AC/DC tribute band, BC/DC.

On Sunday, Five Alarm Funk will take the main stage in the plaza.
