The Fernie Legion has donated $2,500 to five local groups, keeping with it’s ongoing commitment to support the local community.

The Legion donated $500 each to Elk Valley Air Search and Rescue, Angel Flight East Kootenay, the Elk Valley Dolphins Swim Club, the Fernie Cadet Corp and Days for Girls.

The ongoing pandemic has put a damper on the Legion’s fundraising activities and outreach, but Jeannie Watson, who is president of the Fernie Legion said they were still trying to help out.

“We’re struggling to keep our head above water, but we still want to keep up with our obligations to the community and help where we can.”

Just this past year, the Fernie Legion went without some $8,000 in expected poppy sales due to not being able to put out poppy trays, while limits on gatherings prevented a traditional Remembrance Day ceremony.

“The best way to support us is to come in and have a cold beverage,” said Watson. “That’s all we can do for now until everything settles down.”
