The Fernie Legion has donated $1,500 to three local community groups and charities.

Speaking at the weekly meat draw in Fernie on Saturday, Fernie Legion President, Jeannie Watson said that “the last year has been tough on all of us.

“(But) we have the privilege of giving away some money.”

$500 went to the Salvation Army for the Red Kettle Campaign, which is the Salvation Army’s largest single fundraiser, supplying funds for Christmas hampers and toys for those in need over the holiday season.

Another $500 went to the Senior Citizens Drop-in Centre for ongoing operations in providing a community hub for community members of all ages, and the last $500 went to Angel Flight East Kootenay, which provides free urgent (but not emergency) medical flights between East Kootenay and Kelowna for those that otherwise would have to make the trek across the mountains.

Watson said the three groups were chosen because they all kept the donations and goodwill in the local community.

The $1,500 was raised through the Legion’s poppy campaign and the weekly meat draw - not that it is able to be held again after a long hiatus through COVID-19.

“We’re hoping that 2022 will be better,” said Watson.
