Fernie Rotary has donated $1,000 to the Sparwood Food Bank as part of its 100th anniversary.

Kicking off ten months of donations, the Sparwood Food Bank is the first of ten Elk Valley causes to receive funds from Fernie Rotary, with another $1,000 to be given each month for the next nine months as part of celebrating its 100th anniversary in Fernie come summer 2022.

“We were honored to support the Sparwood Food Bank and Food Share which is open 7 days a week in Sparwood and meets the needs of many Elk Valley residents,” said Fernie Rotary club member, Evelyn Cutts.

“It’s a volunteer run organization and we know from our involvement with the Fernie Food Bank that funds are always necessary and always go to good use. With the support of Save-On-Foods in Sparwood the Food Bank / Food Share is able to supply those in need.”

Each month, another recipient will be named. Every recipient will be a registered charity that does work in the Elk Valley.

“When we thought of this idea we wanted to help organizations around the valley,” said Cutts.

Funds for the giveaway comes from the Rotary Community Online Bingo which runs every Friday night.

On Wednesday Feb. 23, Fernie Rotary also gave away $1,000 in gift cards to local liquor stores to the winner of their 2021 Wine Tree Raffle, with local Laura Loewen winning the hefty prize.
