Fernie SAR rescues motorist

Fernie Search and Rescue (SAR) stepped in to save a motorist who was stranded near the top of Morrissey Ridge on Monday, May 4.

The motorist, a local resident, was attempting to reach the microwave towers when he got stuck in deep snow.

He called for help at approximately 10 p.m. after trying to move his vehicle.

“One thing we try to tell people is to call as early as possible because darkness makes a rescue a little more difficult,” said SAR volunteer Simon Piney who was one of the two members that rescued the motorist.

“We will respond to any call but the earlier we get the call, the better,” he said.

SAR made use of a UTV equipped with snow tracks to reach the man and return him to town.
